Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), an electricity utility company in Florida says it will build ‘the world’s largest solar-powered battery system’ at the FPL Manatee Energy Storage Centre. It will have 409 MW of capacity spread across 40 acres of land and will be able to distribute 900 MWh of clean energy when it begins operations in late 2021.
To explain the enormity of its capacity, FPL says it will be equivalent to 100 million iPhone batteries, and 4 times larger than the largest battery in operation in the world now.
This project will be charged by an existing FPL solar power plant in Parrish, Manatee County that is operational since 2016. It will speed up the plan to accelerate the retirement of 2 natural gas generating units built in 1970s in the vicinity, replacing these with renewable energy.
“By deploying energy from the batteries when there is higher demand for electricity, FPL will offset the need to run other power plants – further reducing emissions and saving customers money through avoided fuel costs,” it explained. EPL estimates the project will save its customers over $100 million while eliminating more than 1 million tons of CO2 emissions.
The utility is also working on smaller battery installations across the state along with solar power plants and efficiency upgrades to replace 1,638 MW of generating capacity.
By the year 2030, FPL aims to deploy 30 million PV panels as part of its 30 by 30 plan. In line with this, it will install more than 1 million panels in the form of 4 solar power plants of 74.5 MW each in 2019 (see Florida Utility To Develop 300 MW Solar In 2019).
