Tier 1 Chinese solar module supplier JinkoSolar Holding Co., Ltd. has reported achieving a 25.25% power conversion efficiency for its large area N-type monocrystalline silicon solar cells, which it said is a new world record for large size passivated contact (TOPCon) solar cells.
The company says its claim has been independently confirmed by the National Institute of Metrology (NIM), China. Jinko’s management believes this breakthrough has paved the way for the mass production of the company’s N-type TOPCon solar cells.
The 25.25% is 0.35% points higher than its previous efficiency level reached for this cell type it reported in January 2021 which itself was a growth from 24.79% it announced in July 2020 (see JinkoSolar: 24.9% Efficiency Record For TOPCon Solar Cell).
“Material upgrades integrated into the cell process and fabrication on a practical size of 267.4cm2 of high quality monocrystalline Czochralski (CZ) silicon substrates allowed the Company to achieve 25.25% cell efficiency,” explained the company.
JinkoSolar shared it was able to achieve the increased efficiency using ultra-thin polysilicon, and incorporating several advanced technologies some of which included its in-house high quality N-type wafer, passivating contact, advanced diffusion system, surface passivation, metallization of crystalline solar cells and other innovative technologies.
During our 2-day Virtual Conference on Very High-Power Solar Modules held in mid-May 2021 as a SNEC Preview, JinkoSolar’s Product Manager Leo Cong said his company’s 610W Tiger Pro module had 22.3% efficiency and the company has over 800 MW capacity for its N-type module products (see Day 1: TaiyangNews Very High-Power Solar Modules Conference). The recoding of Cong’s conference presentation titled Tiger Pro 610W Module: Combination of Innovative HOT2.0 Technology & High Power provided background on Jinko’s n-type module technology (see recording here)
In April 2021, JinkoSolar’s peer LONGi reported 25.09% efficiency for its monocrystalline bifacial N-type TOPCon solar cell, confirmed by Germany’s ISFH (see LONGi Reports 25.09% N-Type TOPCon Cell Efficiency).
