Germany Installed 403 MW Solar PV Capacity In May 2021

German Monthly Solar PV Installations Lose Pace, Dropping To 403 MW In May 2021, After Installing Over 600 MW In Preceding Month

Germany Installed 403 MW Solar PV Capacity In May 2021

403 MW solar power capacity added in the month of May 2021 in Germany contributes to a total of 2.45 GW the country has installed between January 2021 and May 2021.

  • Bundesnetzagentur said in May 2021, German PV installations added up to 403 MW
  • It is less than 446 MW added in May 2020 and from 617 MW in the month of April 2021
  • With the addition of 403 MW, Germany has now installed 2.45 GW of solar within 1st 5 months of 2021

Latest monthly solar PV installations registered in Germany with the country’s Federal Network Agency reflect (Bundesnetzagentur) a steep dip down to 403.14 MW in the month of May 2021. This is a decline of more than 34% over 617.45 MW the agency had declared for the month of April 2021 after adjustment of more installations registered, and before that it had pinned the number at 619 MW (see Germany Installed 619 MW New Solar In April 2021).

It is even less than 446 MW reportedly installed in May 2020. Between the initial 5 months of 2021, Germany has now installed 2.45 GW of solar power systems, and its cumulative capacity till the end of May 2021 reached close to 56.4 GW.

The monthly increase in solar capacity in Germany reported since January 2021 had been prompting speculations of the country exiting 2021 with around 6 GW new capacity, as forecast by EUPD Research in March 2021. Analysts also expects to see non-funded bilateral power contracts contributing an additional 400 MW (see EUPD Pegs 6 GW New PV Additions In Germany In 2021).

Germany aims to install 5 GW of solar PV capacity annually to be able to reach 100 GW target by 2030.  With around 56 GW already installed, there remains close to 44 GW to be installed more to reach the official target. However, the German utility and water sector believes Germany needs to be more ambitious with regards to solar, asking for 150 GW by 2030, equal to deployments of an average of 10 GW/yr (see German Utilities Want 150 GW Installed Solar PV By 2030). Interestingly, the German Conservative/Social government did not include a higher solar target in its recently passed Climate Protection Act 2030.
