  • Romania added 624 MW of power generation capacity in 2023, according to the Energy Ministry
  • It comprises 496 MW of new solar power plants, which increased from 25 MW in 2022
  • An increase in the number of prosumers took the total installed capacity for this segment to over 1.5 GW at the end of 2023

Romania's solar energy installed capacity increased by 496 MW in 2023 with new solar power plants coming online, according to the country's Ministry of Energy. This is an increase from 25 MW of solar commissioned in the year 2022.

At the end of 2022, Romania's total solar power installed capacity stood at 1.8 GW, according to SolarPower Europe.

Solar energy made up the largest chunk of Romania's new grid-connected power production capacity addition of 624 MW last year. Apart from solar, 72 MW of capacity was added with wind turbines while hydrocarbon technology contributed another 56 MW.

The ministry also revealed that the number of prosumers is likely to have increased significantly last year as it counts the total number of prosumers at the end of 2023 to have exceeded 100,000 with an installed capacity of well over 1.5 GW. In comparison, at the end of 2022, the country had 40,171 prosumers with a cumulative installed capacity of 417 MW.

Final data still needs to be released by the Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE), said Romanian Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja.

"The fact that in 2023 the new capacities put into operation were almost 10 times higher than the previous year shows that Romania is increasingly attractive for investors in the energy sector, especially in the green energy segment," added the minister.

He expects the volume of green energy generation to grow further in the near future as it gets ready to launch wind and solar tenders for 5 GW capacity in 2024 and 2025. In March 2024, it plans to launch 2 renewable energy auctions (see Romania Announces €815 Million Support For Renewables).
