  • NamPower has secured 2 companies to build 40 MW solar PV capacity in Namibia
  • Of the 2 projects of 20 MW capacity each, one will be built by a joint venture between Hopsol Africa and Tulive Private Equity
  • The other 20 MW project will be built by Access Aussenkehr Solar One Namibia

Namibia Power Corporation (NamPower), the state owned electricity utility of Namibia, has cleared way for 2 solar power projects to come up in the country after it signed EPC agreements with 2 companies in December 2020. Each of these projects will have 20 MW capacity, reported local media.

One of the projects will be built by a joint venture between Hopsol Africa and Tulive Private Equity that plans to set it up in Erongo region’s Omburu site. Media reports suggest the NAD 500 million ($33.58 million) plant will have 33,000 solar panels and 100 inverters with 67 single-axis trackers. On completion, it will be owned and operated by NamPower since the utility will fund its construction.

The Central Procurement Board of Namibia had launched a tender in October 2019 to seek EPC contractors for 20 MW Omburu Solar Plant (see 20 MW Solar EPC Tender In Namibia).

The other 20 MW project will be stationed near Khan substation near the town of Usakos in Namibia by EPC company Access Aussenkehr Solar One Namibia.

These projects, according to NamPower, will bring down electricity tariffs for the utility’s customers.
