The world’s largest corporate procurer of renewable energy, US digital business giant Amazon has contracted 37 new projects worth 3.5 GW capacity. These projects, mostly solar, and some with storage, are located across the globe, increasing its cumulative clean energy offtake capacity by nearly 30% to 15.7 GW.

Of the total, 23 projects are in 13 states of the US, taking its total capacity in the country to 10.4 GW, and includes Amazon’s largest renewable energy project to date by capacity, a 500 MW solar farm in Texas. The list in the US includes a 300 MW solar plant with 150 MW battery storage in Arizona and a 150 MW solar project with 75 MW storage in California.

There are 3 solar farms and 2 wind farms in Spain with a combined capacity of 314 MW, taking its total investment in the county to 1.4 GW.

In France, it has invested in its 2nd solar project taking its total to 38 MW renewable capacity in the country.

The remaining 8 rooftop solar projects comprise a 2.7 MW installation in Dubai making it the e-commerce giant’s 1st such project in the UAE. With an aggregate capacity of more than 5 MW, it has invested in 7 rooftop solar facilities in Australia, Canada, India and Japan.

In all, Amazon’s renewable energy project tally has increased to 310 projects which, when online, are expected to generate 42,000 GWh of renewable energy annually.

Amazon says these new agreements with unidentified developers for undisclosed projects marks a significant progress for it to achieve the goal of renewable energy powering 100% of its operations by 2025, 5 years ahead of the original 2030 target.

Of the 31.1 GW clean energy procured by corporates in 2021, Amazon was on the top with 6.2 GW in 9 nations, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (see Over 31 GW Corporate Clean Energy PPAs in 2021).
