Spanish natural gas and energy services company Naturgy has bagged a corporate contract to sell 203 GWh solar and wind energy annually to automotive engineering company Gestamp that aims to secure renewable energy for consumption in Spain in line with its sustainability initiatives.
The 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA), starting from January 2022, will see all of 21 Gestamp's production facilities (out of 100 it operates globally) and 2 R&D facilities in Spain operating with 100% renewable energy. Gestamp says this makes it the 1st company in the automotive sector of Spain to operate with 100% renewable energy.
This annual supply of solar and wind power will enable 13% reduction in Gestamp's total carbon footprint emanating from its electricity use, it added.
Altogether the Spanish facilities account for 18% of the automotive company's global energy consumption, hence the effort to lower costs and emissions with the help of renewable energy.
Exact sources of this solar and wind energy were not shared.
Naturgy is quickly expanding its renewable energy footprint eyeing a bigger it can play in the green hydrogen domain. In December 2020, with Enagas, it announced what it termed back then as the largest plant for green hydrogen production in Spain to produce 9,000 tons of renewable hydrogen with 400 MW solar PV capacity powering 60 MW electrolyzer (see 400 MW Solar For Spanish Green Hydrogen Plant). It is also part of 30 companies to have launched the Green Hydrogen Initiative aiming for 95 GW solar and 67 GW electrolysis capacity by 2030 (see 95 GW Solar & 67 GW Electrolysis By 2030).
