  • Juwi has commissioned a 36 MW solar farm and 7.6 MW battery energy storage system in Egypt
  • It is integrated with the existing diesel power station and will help power Centamin's Sukari Gold Mine
  • It is equipped with bifacial solar modules, single axis trackers and Juwi's own hybrid IQ micro-grid technology

German solar power company Juwi says it is in the final stages of commissioning what it terms is the world's 'largest' solar hybrid project comprising a 36 MW solar farm and a 7.6 MW battery energy storage system integrated into the existing diesel power station, for Centamin's Sukari Gold Mine in Egypt.

The company has deployed bifacial solar PV modules for the project with single axis tracking system and its own hybrid IQ micro-grid technology through which solar and storage systems have been integrated into the existing off-grid network.

Listing the benefits of the project, located some 400 km from the COP27 venue Sharm El-Sheikh, Juwi said the gold mine can lower its annual use of diesel by an average of 22 million liters, and save up to 70,000 liters per day. At the same time, it will be able to reduce the exposure to volatile fuel pricing while bringing down its operating costs.

Centamin expects to save $20 million annually at current diesel prices with this hybrid facility.

"We are delighted to have been able to deliver this flagship project to Centamin and, furthermore, to have been able to demonstrate the vital role that dependable solar, wind and battery solutions can already play in the transformation of the resource sector on the de-carbonization pathway," stated Juwi COO and Managing Director, Stephan Hansen.
