  • Of the total, 180 MW of renewable energy capacity will be deployed for Vedanta's Jharsuguda Aluminium Smelter in Odisha and 200 MW for BALCO at Korba in Chhattisgarh
  • Under the PDA, Vedanta's aluminium business arm Vedanta Limited will procure power from this capacity for 25 years

Indian aluminium producer Vedanta Aluminium has said it will source electricity from 380 MW of captive hybrid renewable energy capacity to power its aluminium smelters in Odisha and Chhattisgarh through long term contract with Sterlite Power Technologies.

Sterlite is in the business of supplying hybrid power from solar, wind and storage solutions and for this power delivery agreement (PDA) signed with Vedanta's aluminium business arm Vedanta Limited, it will be engaged through its affiliates.

As per the agreement, of the total 180 MW of renewable energy capacity will be deployed for Vedanta's Jharsuguda Aluminium Smelter in Odisha and 200 MW for Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO) at Korba in Chhattisgarh. Vedanta will source the clean energy for 25 years from the date of commissioning.

"It is a strategic imperative for the company to reduce carbon emissions across every process stage. As a result of this unwavering focus, Vedanta Aluminium has reduced its GHG emissions intensity by 21% in FY21 while almost tripling its production, over FY12 baseline," stated Vedanta.

The aluminium producer counts this capacity to help bring down its GHG emissions by 15,00,000 tons of CO2 equivalent annually as it targets to go net zero by 2050. At the same time, it will also 'insulate the company from volatility in the commodities market'.

It calls itself India's largest industrial customer of renewable energy in FY2022 having procured around 3 billion units to produce its low carbon green aluminium brand called Restore.
