70 MW Floating Solar Capacity Energized in Netherlands

• BayWa and its local Dutch subsidiary GroenLeven have switched on 70 MW floating solar power capacity in the Netherlands
• The 41.1 MW Sellingen floating solar project will be the company's largest such project in the country, followed by 29.8 MW Uivermeertjes facility
• It claims to have now over 180 MW of floating solar power capacity in the country

German renewable energy company BayWa has expanded its portfolio of operational floating solar power projects in Europe to 11 projects representing more than 180 MW capacity, with the addition of 70.9 MW it recently commissioned in the Netherlands.

It claims the 2 floating solar projects are the largest outside of Asia. While the Sellingen project has 41.1 MW capacity, its Uivermeertjes facility is 29.8 MW large. Both the projects are built on the deepest part of former sand extraction lakes with a view to protect the flora and fauna in the banks, the company explained.

Energized with its local Dutch subsidiary GroenLeven, together both the projects are expected to generate enough clean energy to supply to more than 20,000 households.

Referring to the initial results of a study it has tasked Hanze University and Buro Bakker/AKTB with, related to its 27.4 MW floating solar park in the Netherlands, the company said the 2 projects use unique systems that have no negative impacts on the surrounding environment (see BayWa Shares Floating PV System Study Results).
