Amazon says since the beginning of 2023, it has added 39 new renewable energy projects in Europe, representing more than 1 GW of clean energy capacity. The new additions include its maiden solar farm in Greece.

The 39 new projects include 15 rooftop solar installations on the company's facilities and 24 utility-scale solar and wind energy projects. Latest projects in the list are rooftop solar plants spread across Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and the UK. Utility-scale facilities are sited in Finland, Germany, Greece, Spain, Sweden and the UK.

It does not share any more details about the individual capacity of the plants or the technology, nor about the developers.

With these projects, the e-commerce giant says it now has enabled more than 160 wind and solar projects across 13 nations in Europe, representing 5.8 GW capacity. Once online, these can power more than 4.7 million households annually.

The largest corporate clean energy buyer in 2022 on BloombergNEF's list, Amazon targets to power its operations including Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers, fulfilment centers and physical stores with 100% renewable energy by 2025. It claims that in 2022, 90% of electricity it consumed globally was powered by renewable energy.

"Corporate investment is an important catalyst to help transition toward a clean energy future, and we look forward to continuing to work with governments, local communities, and energy providers across Europe to deliver more renewable energy into local grids," said Director of Energy, EMEA at Amazon, Lindsay McQuade.

Earlier this year, Amazon said it procured 8.3 GW renewable energy in 2022 from 133 projects in 11 countries, exceeding 20 GW of total renewable energy capacity contracted till the end of December 2022 (see Amazon's Total RE Portfolio At 2022-End Stood At 20 GW+).
