  • Entergy Mississippi plans to add 1 GW of renewable energy capacity to its portfolio
  • 500 MW is planned to be added by 2025, and remaining 500 MW by 2027
  • This capacity will be used to replace some of the aging natural gas plants in its power mix
  • It will start issuing request for proposals in 2022
  • Another Entergy group company Entergy Louisiana has announced it will procure power from 475 MW solar power capacity from DESRI and Opdenergy projects

US electricity supplier Entergy Corporation's Entergy Mississippi will add 1 GW renewable energy capacity, such as solar, to its portfolio over the next 5 years. It will replace some aging natural gas plants under the utility's Economic Development with Green Energy (EDGE) strategy.

The plan is to add 500 MW of renewable power to its portfolio by 2025, followed by another 500 MW by 2027, by when the company's total power generation portfolio will increase from less than 1% to 17% in 3 years, accounting for almost 1/3rd of the total mix that's currently dominated by natural gas.

Entergy Mississippi said in early 2022 it will start issuing request for proposals (RFP) for multiple renewable energy projects. It will then take the finalized plans to the Mississippi Public Service Commission to review and approve.

Management shared that it has contracted Recurrent Energy to construct a 100 MW solar power facility in Sunflower County to replace some of the natural gas capacity it recently retired (see Recurrent Energy Secures Approval For 100 MW Solar Project).

In a related development, Entergy Louisiana recently said it will purchase 475 MW of solar power capacity to grow its green power generating portfolio, from 4 facilities for a period of 20 years. While 150 MW Vacherie Solar Energy Center, 150 MW Jacques Louisiana Solar in St. James Parish and 50 MW Sunlight Road Solar in Washington Parish will be built by D.E. Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI), 125 MW Elizabeth Solar Plant in Allen Parish will be executed by Opdenergy.

All the projects are currently seeking approval from the Louisiana Public Service Commission which once cleared will ensure the facilities to start delivering clean energy to customers in 2024.
