Inkia Energy is building a 1 GW solar cluster in Peru with 3 adjacently located projects
It has secured environmental approval to expand one of the facilities here from 228 MW to 338 MW
Its combined renewable energy pipeline exceeds 3 GW with the inclusion of wind, and solar with storage projects
Global infrastructure investor I-Squared Capital-backed Inkia Energy of Peru has unveiled more than 3 GW of solar-PV heavy renewable energy capacity in its pipeline, which it claims will make it the largest and most diversified generation company in the country.
A leading power generator in Peru, Inkia’s wholly-owned subsidiary Kallpa has received environmental approval for the expansion of its Sunny Solar Project from 228 MW to 338 MW. The project is currently under construction in Southern Peru. It is scheduled to become fully operational by H2 2025.
It has 2 more solar projects in the pipeline, located adjacent to the Sunny project, that are also under construction. These are backed by energy and I-REC offtake agreements. This trio of PV projects will contribute close to 1 GW of renewable energy capacity to the National Interconnected Grid, starting in Q4 2025.
Beyond solar PV, the company also has wind energy projects in its portfolio representing a combined capacity of at least 600 MW. These are scheduled to be launched in 2026. Its more than 3 GW pipeline also includes several solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects.
Inkia already has 2,237 MW of installed power generation capacity comprising hydroelectric and combined-cycle natural gas generation portfolio, and a 34 MW BESS plant, through Kallpa.
The expansion of the Sunny project represents the beginning of the ‘Inkia 2.0 expansion campaign’ aligned with Peru’s energy needs, stated the company. The diversified power generation portfolio is aimed at providing continuous and reliable power supply through renewables and natural gas to cover renewable energy shortfalls and intermittency, it added.
“The launch of Sunny marks the beginning of the Inkia 2.0 expansion campaign, aligned with Peru`s energy needs and securing Inkia as a leading energy solutions company in the country,” said Willem Van Twembeke, Inkia Energy's CEO.
Earlier this year, in June 2024, another global infrastructure investor Actis launched a new independent power producer (IPP) called Orygen in Peru, with a 12 GW development portfolio (see Actis Launches Independent Power Producer In Peru).
At the end of 2023, Peru’s combined renewable energy capacity was over 6.74 GW, led by hydropower with 5.5 GW capacity, and 332 MW of solar PV generation, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
