  • Andhra Pradesh has received a proposal from Triveni Glass Limited for a solar glass manufacturing facility
  • The company plans to establish such a fab with 840 MT/day production capacity that will create 2,000 jobs
  • Factory is likely to be located at Pangidi in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district

An Indian business group Triveni Glass Limited has proposed to establish a solar glass manufacturing plant with a production capacity of 840 metric ton (MT)/day in the State of Andhra Pradesh for an estimated investment of INR 10 billion ($121 million).

The proposed factory is to be sited at Pangidi in East Godavari district of the state. The company expects the fab to create 2,000 jobs, according to a news report by local press agency the Press Trust of India (PTI). The news precedes Global Investors Summit 2023 that Andhra Pradesh plans to host in March 1st week.

Currently, Borosil Renewables is the only known solar glass manufacturer in India with an annual production capacity of 450 tons per day (TPD) till Q1/FY2023. It is now also expanding in Europe with the acquisition of Interfloat group (see India PV News Snippets). Addition of local competition in the space of solar glass in times of accelerated push to vertically integrated solar PV manufacturing in India bodes well for a solar ecosystem in the country.

Little is known however about Triveni Glass. Headquartered in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, Triveni Glass had been producing tempered glass, mirrors, float glass among others in India at various locations including Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district where it has now proposed to locate the solar glass fab. According to its website, the company exited all glass business 'due to various reasons' and ventured into real-estate.

Home to several large-scale solar parks in India, Andhra Pradesh had an installed solar power capacity of over 4.2 GW till January 31, 2023. It aims to facilitate setting up of 120 GW of solar, wind, wind-solar hybrid and hybrid projects with storage under its Renewable Energy Export Policy, 2020 (see Andhra Pradesh Launches RE Export Policy 2020). According to the state government, Andhra Pradesh has the potential to attract investment of INR 3.5 trillion to INR 4.0 trillion in 44 GW wind and 38 GW solar power.
