  • JinkoSolar and JA Solar to be the solar PV module suppliers

  • CATL to be the BESS supplier

  • Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and POWERCHINA to be the EPC contractors for this project to be built in Abu Dhabi

Masdar, an Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company and UAE’s pioneer in clean energy innovation, has announced the preferred contractors and suppliers for its pathbreaking solar PV and Battery and Energy Storage System (BESS).

Located in Abu Dhabi, the project features a 5.2 GW (DC) solar PV plant paired with a 19 GWh BESS, making it the largest combined solar and battery storage facility globally. Considered first of its kind, the project will be able to generate 1 GW of continuous and uninterrupted renewable energy.

Masdar is executing this project in partnership with Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), having made an announcement about it last week (see UAE To Host World’s ‘1st’ Facility To Provide RE 24x7, At Scale).

Here are the details of the chosen companies and their deliverables:

Suppliers

  • World leading module makers JA Solar & JinkoSolar: Each will supply 2.6 GW of advanced TOPCon PV modules, ensuring optimized performance and maximum efficiency for over 30 years

  • Large battery manufacturer and leading BESS supplier CATL: As the BESS supplier, CATL will deploy its cutting-edge TENER technology, delivering 19 GWh capacity with all-round safety, long service life, and high efficiency during the entire project lifetime

EPC Contractors

  • Indian multinational EPC giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Chinese energy projects developer POWERCHINA will bring decades of expertise to ensure the seamless execution of this ambitious project

Speaking on the occasion, Abdulaziz Alobaidli, Chief Operating Officer of Masdar, said: “The record-breaking project we are developing with EWEC is a giant step forward in the clean energy transformation, overcoming the intermittency challenges of renewables and enabling the dispatch of clean energy 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As Masdar’s largest and most ambitious project to date, we made sure we are working with the best possible partners that will deliver to the highest standards. I look forward to working with these preferred suppliers in setting a new global benchmark in clean energy innovation.”

This pioneering initiative, enabling seamless integration of solar power into the grid, will provide unparalleled stability and efficiency. It also aligns with the UAE’s vision of sustainability and supports its ambitious goals, including the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and the commitments established during COP28.
