Indian information communications technologies company Sify Technologies Limited will source 231 MW of solar and wind power for its hyperscale data centers in the country, after entering power purchase agreements with Vibrant Energy Holdings.
Of the 231 MW capacity, PPAs for 67 MW solar power capacity had been signed in March 2021. This capacity was recently commissioned by Vibrant which is a majority owned subsidiary of Blue Leaf Energy Asia which itself is a Macquarie's Green Investment Group (GIG).
According to Sify, by simultaneously investing in solar and wind energy technologies, it will be able to deliver most of the power required for its flagship data centers in Mumbai from renewables. It plans to continue increasing its portfolio of renewables as it aims to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and lower its carbon footprint.
"With the constantly expanding need for world-class data center facilities to meet the burgeoning data-centric transformation of Indian businesses, we believe that investing in clean energy sources to fuel this transformation is a social imperative," said Sify Chairman Raju Vegesna.
Earlier in January 2022, telecommunications company Bharti Airtel commissioned a 21 MW captive solar power plant in Maharashtra under partnership with Avaada Energy, for its data centers and switching centers (see India PV News Snippets).
