British solar developer Solarcentury has offloaded its African solar business for an undisclosed amount to African independent energy trading company BB Energy. According to Norway based energy company Statkraft owned Solarcentury, this sale will allow the company to focus on its core markets in concert with the parent (see Statkraft To Acquire UK Solar Developer Solarcentury).
For BB Energy (BBE) this acquisition of Solarcentury Africa (SCA) provides it access to a solar and storage project pipeline with an aggregate capacity of 2.1 GW, located across the continent. These projects are 'all backed by strong regional and international C&Is'.
"Much of the pipeline is in the development of solar and storage for mining operations where the dramatic drop in the LCOE from solar is creating strong demand," shared SCA that provides development, construction, operation and financing to end-users.
BBE has made this investment through its BBE Renewables Division. The company plans to leverage its experience in the energy trading field to offer clean, reliable and innovative energy solutions to its clients.
"Solarcentury Africa provides BB Energy with the opportunity to step into renewables in a part of the world where the demand for solar is accelerating and where BB Energy can bring to bear their experience of working across the continent," added Solarcentury Africa Director Jason de Carteret.
During the transitional period, the acquired company will continue to trade as Solarcentury Africa.
