  • LONGi has broken ground for its huge silicon wafer production project with 100 GW annual capacity
  • It has also started constructing 50 GW monocrystalline silicon cell facility in Xixian region of China
  • The RMB 45.2 billion project is spread in 3,081 acres and on completion will employ 15,000 people

LONGi Green Energy Technology has started construction on its plans to build a new 100 GW monocrystalline silicon wafer project along with a 50 GW monocrystalline silicon cell facility in Jinghe New City in Xixian region of China, according to local media reports, giving absolute certainty to the gigantic project.

It will become LONGi's photovoltaic production base with the largest construction scale, the highest production capacity and the most advanced technology in the world after completion, claims the company as per the reports.

LONGi aims to employ 15,000 people after completion of the project that's spread in 3,081 acres. It is expected to cost an investment of about RMB 45.2 billion ($6.32 billion).

The 50 GW cell output is anticipated to help generate close to 133 billion kWh annually and reduce the consumption of 48 million tons of standard coal.

The company announced these plans in January 2023 that it said were aligned with its future production capacity planning (see LONGi Announces 100 GW Solar Wafer Project).

At the end of 2022, LONGi had an annual production capacity of 133 GW for wafers, 50 GW for cells and 85 GW for solar modules, which it targets to expand to 190 GW, 110 GW and 130 GW by the end of 2023 (see LONGi 2022 Higher Operating Income Up By 60 Percent).

Meanwhile the company continues to make waves with its solar technology advancements. It recently announced 33.5% perovskite-silicon tandem cell efficiency during Intersolar Europe 2023, which was an increase of 1.7% from 31.8% it announced a month back at SNEC 2023 (see LONGi Tandem Cell Record).

As part of TaiyangNews & SNEC Solar Leadership Conversations at SNEC 2023, LONGi Founder and President Zhenguo Li provided details about the group's plans to venture into more geographies and also explore electrolyzers further (see SNEC Exclusive: LONGi President Interview).
