  • Mongolia has become host to a 15 MW solar power plant, the largest PV facility in the country
  • The project was commissioned by Japan's Sharp Corporation and Shigemitsu Shoji Co. Ltd., the same team that brought a 10 MW PV plant online in January 2017
  • The 15 MW facility is located in the Economic Development Zone of Zamyn-Üüdin the province of Dornogovi

Mongolia has switched on a 15 MW solar power plant in the the Economic Development Zone of Zamyn-Üüd in Dornogovi province. The project was completed by Japanese companies Sharp Corporation, Shigemitsu Shoji Co. Ltd. and Mongolia's Solar Tech LLC.

The two Japanese companies were also responsible for the 10 MW PV project in Darkhan city that was hitherto the largest solar power plant in the country. The 15 MW PV project is planned to generate 32 million kWh of clean energy annually. It was inaugurated by the country's Prime Minister Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh.

Till now, the largest solar operational solar power plant in Mongolia was a 10 MW facility commissioned in January 2017. In May 2018, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) announced its financial support for a 30 MW solar power plant in Mongolia. The Desert Solar Power Project is being developed 460 km southeast of Ulaanbaatar, near Sainshand, at the border of Gobi Desert. EBRD had stated back then that the 30 MW project will be the first utility scale PV plant in the country (see Mongolian Largest PV Plant Financed By EBRD).

According to Xinhuanet, two other solar power plants are expected to come online in Mongolia with 30 MW and 20 MW of capacity. Both are expected to become operational by the end of 2018 in Dornogovi province. In 2017, its renewable energy capacity was 155 MW. In 2018, the country will add 120 MW of total renewable energy capacity, it reported.
