Danish global fashion group Bestseller has announced completion of its 207 MW solar power plant in Denmark, calling it the country's and Northern Europe's 'largest' solar facility to date. Bestseller is a subsidiary of Heartland that has financed the project.
Located near Holstebro in Denmark, the 207 MW PV facility is 'one of the first' in the country to be built without government subsidies or any private funding. All clean energy generated by the power plant is contracted by Bestseller 'and other companies' under a power purchase agreement (PPA).
Denmark based solar developer Better Energy built the project for Bestseller on 222-hectare land that's estimated to generate enough clean energy to suffice annual electricity requirements for 130,000 Danish consumers.
Heartland's CEO Lise Kaae said the power plant is now ready to be connected to the electricity grid for more households and companies to purchase green renewable energy.
Bestseller targets to become a climate positive organization and sees this project as one of the steps in that direction. "At the same time, we are aware that the majority of Bestseller's extended climate footprint happens in our value chain, from production to the product's end-of-life," said the company's Sustainability Head Dorte Rye Olsen. "Here we take responsibility for our own business, which is an important step to inspire further action."
The facility had been under construction since August 2020 when Bestseller said it will enable the company to lower the carbon footprint of its clothing brands as Jack & Jones, Vero Moda, Vila and Name It (see 200 MW Subsidy-Free Danish Project Enters Construction).
While the company claims the 207 MW facility as the largest in the country, a larger solar farm is in the making in Denmark with 300 MW capacity after Danish municipality of Aabenraa approved European Energy's proposal in October 2020 (see 'Largest' Solar Farm With 300 MW In Northern Europe).
