  • CWP Global and the Government of Mauritania have signed a framework agreement for 30 GW green hydrogen project AMAN
  • The $40 billion project is planned to have 18 GW wind and 12 GW solar power capacity to produce 1.7 MT green hydrogen or 10 MT green ammonia
  • Dakhlet Nouadhibou and Inchiri regions of Mauritania are currently proposed to be the location for this massive project

Renewable energy and green hydrogen projects developer CWP Global has entered a framework agreement with the Government of Mauritania moving forward with the planned 30 GW green hydrogen project worth $40 billion for which it signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) back in November 2021.

Dubbed AMAN, the project is designed to include 18 GW of wind power and 12 GW of solar power capacity, and together it will generate close to 110 TWh annually when fully commissioned. It will be deployed to produce 1.7 million ton (MT) green hydrogen per annum or 10 MT green ammonia for local use and export.

Mauritania is looking at locating the project in the Dakhlet Nouadhibou and Inchiri regions of Mauritania.

CWP Global said the project will also provide cheap electricity, green hydrogen powered buses for public use under a pilot, and more than 50 million m3 of fresh water to local communities and agriculture, obtained from desalination of ocean water.

Regarding the signing of the framework agreement that follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU), CWP Global said it deepens the commitment of both the parties while also elaborating details on the anticipated development phases of the project including land tenure, project design and principals of collaboration to guide its realization. However, the official statement of CWP Global did not elaborate on the same.

"This Framework Agreement is not only a sign that the AMAN project is entering its next phase of development, but also that green hydrogen is emerging as a key tool in the energy transition – both for its potential to boost investment in host regions, and for its promising role in decarbonizing heavy industry," said CWP Global's Founder and Chairman Mark Crandall. "The Framework Agreement sets a course for building the project so that production and export of green hydrogen can begin before the end of the decade."

CWP Global is the name behind the 26 GW Asian Renewable Energy Hub in Australia which ran into troubled waters in June 2021 when the Australian government rejected it citing environmental protection and biodiversity concerns (see 26 GW Wind-Solar Complex In Australia In Trouble).

As for Mauritania, the African nation is also pursuing another green hydrogen project with 10 GW capacity with Chariot Limited (see Green Hydrogen Project In Mauritania).
