Africa's Togo has become home to a 50 MW solar power plant, expected to produce 90,255 MWh of clean energy annually. It was commissioned by UAE based energy company AMEA Power, a subsidiary of Al Nowais Investments (ANI), reported local media.
The 50 MW Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed PV Plant in Blitta region is now grid connected to supply electricity to around 158,383 local households annually, making it AMEA Power's maiden operational power plant in Africa. The UAE company will operate and maintain the plant for 25 years through its local subsidiary AMEA Togo Solar.
The project has a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) in place with Togolese power utility La Compagnie Energie Electrique du Togo (CEET). Back in 2019, AMEA Power called it the country's 1st utility scale renewable energy project developed by an independent power producer (IPP), and financially supported by the West African Development Bank (BOAD) and Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), reported Trade Arabia.
Togo is also part of the World Bank's Scaling Solar Initiative under which it seeks to establish 90 MW solar PV capacity through the competitive route (see Togo Joins World Bank's Scaling Solar Program).
