German industrial engineering company thyssenkrupp AG has been selected to conduct a technical study by UAE based privately-owned special project vehicle (SPV) company Helios Industry for a large green hydrogen and green ammonia project to be located in Abu Dhabi's Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD).
The facility is proposed to be powered by a dedicated 800 MW solar power plant within Kizad which would power a multi-MW electrolyzer plant and an ammonia production facility with a capacity of 20,000 tons annually, to be scale up to 200,000 tons per annum which will be produced by 40,000 tons of green hydrogen.
thyssenkrupp said the water electrolysis plant as well as the sustainable ammonia production processes will be based on its technology.
"The new facility will produce green ammonia which is an energy carrier that enables easy transportation of renewable energy e.g. via ship. It can also be used as emission-free transport fuel and in the fertiliser and chemical industries," said thyssenkrupp's CEO of Uhde business unit, Sami Pelkonen.
If the project takes off, it will be the '1st' commercial plant to produce CO2 free green ammonia from renewables in the UAE, according to thyssenkrupp.
The proposed project was unveiled by Abu Dhabi Ports in May 2021 when it said the ammonia produced will be exported to regional and international markets (see Abu Dhabi Unveils Massive Green Ammonia Project Plans).
