  • Sierra Brava reservoir in Extremadura region of Spain is likely to host a floating solar power plant
  • The 1.125 MW project will be built by Acciona that has secured administrative approval from the local administration
  • It will be built between the municipalities of Alcollarin and Zorita for an investment of €1.5 million, according to a local energy news portal

The local administration of Spain's Extremadura has granted administrative approval to Acciona for its proposed floating solar power plant in the province with a total installed capacity of 1.125 MW DC/990 kW AC. This information has been published in the province's official gazette DOE, reported Elperiodico de la Energia.

As per the report, the entire capacity will be developed between the municipalities of Alcollarin and Zorita on Sierra Brava reservoir. The plant will be built for an investment of over €1.5 million ($1.66 million).

The project will comprise 3,000 PV modules of 375 W power output each to be mounted on 5 independent floatation systems to be connected to three inverters each. All 5 floatation systems will host 600 solar modules grouped into 30 series of 20 each.

Along with building the plant, Acciona will also be looking after associated energy evacuation infrastructure.

Currently, the largest known floating solar power plant in Europe is the 17 MW O'MEGA 1 project of Akuo Energy in Piolenc Commune of France (see Europe Gets Its Largest Floating Solar Plant In France). As floating solar plants of smaller proportions are starting to sprout on the continent, GroenLeven announced its 48 MW floating solar power plant project for the Netherlands in April 2019 (see 48 MW Floating Solar Park Planned in Netherlands).
