Bahrain's Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) has awarded the contract to build a 100 MW solar power plant in the country to a consortium of Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power, Japan's Mitsui & Company and local industrial group AlMoayyed that has a solar engineering division called Almoayyed Solar.

The ACWA Power led consortium's winning power price bid was BHD 14.668 ($38.91) per MWh. The project will be built on a landfill site in Askar and is likely to come online by December 2019.

The Arabian Industry reported the trio beat other contenders such as GS Engineering & Construction, Phelan Energy Goup and Alfanar Contracting to win the capacity.

Dr Abdulhussain Mirza, Bahrain's minister heading Electricity and Water Affairs had been quoted by the Emirates News Agency in January 2019 as saying Abu Dhabi's Masdar was one of the bidders for the 100 MW project (see Masdar Bids For 100 MW Bahrain Solar Tender).

The ACWA led consortium was selected out of 3 developers shortlisted from 13 contenders. Originally, 26 bidders had originally applied for pre-qualification round. The project will now be developed on build-own-operate (BOO) basis.
