Albania's Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy is gearing up to launch a tender for 300 MW solar capacity in the country as part of its plans to auction 1 GW renewable energy capacity under the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development's (EBRD) Renewable Energy Auction Program.

The tender for 'bidder-selected sites' is to be launched by June 2023, and is expected to lead to a series of renewable investments by the project promoters. EBRD has invited prospective bidders to start project preparation activities.

This 300 MW tender will kick start the ministry's plans to add 1 GW renewable energy capacity through at least 3 competitive procedures, as the country aims to become a net exporter of renewable energy by 2030.

The latest solar auction enjoys a grant funding from the Swiss Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

According to the bank, it has so far assisted the ministry to complete 2 solar auctions representing a total of 240 MW (see Bidders Sought For Floating Solar Plant In Albania).

"Our work in Albania shows what can be achieved with the appropriate legal and regulatory framework, credible government commitments and the importance of the running competitive tenders," said EBRD's Director Sustainable Business and Infrastructure, Gianpiero Nacci. "We are delighted to continue to support the country in meeting their ambitious targets."
