Brazil Expects 298 New Power Generation Projects In 2023

Utility Scale Wind & Solar To Account For Over 90% New Power Generation Capacity To Come Online In Brazil This Year, Says ANEEL

Anu Bhambhani
  • ANEEL forecasts Brazil to grid connect 10.3 GW new power generation capacity in 2023
  • More than 90% of it will be led by utility scale solar and wind power plants
  • Bahia alone is likely to bring online 3 GW large scale wind and solar with Minas Gerais adding another 1.8 GW utility scale PV

The year 2023 will set a 'new record' for new power generation capacity coming online in Brazil, representing a total of 10.3 GW led majorly by large scale wind and solar power projects according to the country's National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL).

It will be the 'highest level of expansion' for any single year since the agency was founded in December 1997.

While it does not give any individual capacity projections for various technologies, over 90% of the estimated installed capacity will be contributed by utility scale solar and wind energy projects.

Of the latter, more than 70% will mainly be concentrated in the states of Bahia, Rio Grande do Norte and Minas Gerais, with Bahia alone bringing online more than 3 GW capacity this year. Another 1.8 GW of utility scale solar is scheduled to become operational in Minas Gerais.

Solar PV led distributed generation capacity, a strength of this market, will add more to the overall numbers ANEEL forecasts for 2023.

Brazil exited 2022 with 8.23 GW new utility scale power generation capacity comprising 2.67 GW solar PV. Local PV association ABSOLAR counted the country's cumulative installed solar PV capacity at the end of December 2022 as having reached 23.9 GW (see Brazil Installed Over 2.67 GW New Utility Solar In 2022).
