Canada's Alberta province has become home to a 132 MW AC solar power facility which its project partners—Canadian renewable energy developer Capstone Infrastructure Corporation and Denmark based solar investor and developer Obton A/S—claim to be the country's largest operational solar facility.
Claresholm Solar Project in Willow Creek municipal district is contracted to sell the majority of power generated and associated emission offsets to TC Energy under a power purchase agreement, while remaining energy will be sold into Alberta's wholesale power pool.
Early stage development work on the project was carried out by Perimeter Solar that in October 2019 signed a solar PPA with TC Energy for 74.25 MW capacity from the project (see Perimeter Solar Signs PPA For 130 MW Canadian Project).
"This was an ambitious project with tight timelines, and Capstone, along with PCL (contractor) and all our suppliers, had the added burden of overcoming the numerous challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, which they passed with flying colors," said Capstone CEO David Eva.
Another larger scale solar project is being planned in Alberta by Greengate Power Corporation along with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners with 400 MW capacity (see 400 MW Alberta PV Project Secures Investment).
