  • European Energy has begun construction on a 225.5 MW agrivoltaic project in Sicily

  • The project is expected to produce 405 GWh annually and combine solar generation with agricultural and biodiversity initiatives, stated the Danish company

  • It won support for this project under Italy’s FER X CfD scheme, which provides it with long-term revenue visibility

European Energy of Denmark has started construction on a 225.5 MW agrivoltaic project near Vizzini, Italy. The company said the project is expected to become Italy’s largest agrivoltaic plant and one of the largest in Europe upon completion.

To be built for a total investment exceeding €200 million, the project will generate an estimated 405 GWh of electricity annually from solar panels installed 1.3 m above ground. This corresponds to the electricity consumption of more than 135,000 households.

The development, spread across 260 hectares, combines solar power generation with agricultural activities, including grazing for around 820 sheep on site, reforestation, and biodiversity measures, it added.

European Energy won the project under Italy’s FER X Transitional Contract for Difference (CfD) scheme, which the company says provides it with long-term revenue visibility. The Vizzini facility forms part of 5 solar projects awarded to European Energy under the FER X scheme, totaling 513 MW across Sicily, Puglia, and Molise. Italy has concluded 2 auction rounds under the FER X scheme (see Italy Awards 1.1 GW Solar PV Under 2nd FER-X Auction).

The Danish developer is overseeing development, engineering, procurement, and construction activities for the facility.

Alessandro Migliorini, Head of Public Affairs, Italy, at European Energy, said the project was developed in close coordination with local authorities and stakeholders, with a focus on integrating renewable energy production with local agricultural activities and environmental measures.

Jens-Peter Zink, Deputy CEO at European Energy, added, “Vizzini is a project of a substantial scale with strong long-term fundamentals. The combination of contracted revenues, advanced-stage development, grid connection and large-scale production capacity makes it an attractive asset profile within the European renewable energy market.”

Earlier, in March 2026, SUNfarming GmbH announced one of Europe’s largest agrivoltaic projects with 753 MW installed capacity, to be located in Germany (see Europe Solar PV News Snippets).
