  • CRE has picked 35 winning projects under its latest PPE2 auction round in France

  • For the 500 MW tender, it awarded 500.6 MW capacity including 463.7 MW solar capacity

  • The weighted average winning bid was determined as €80.6/MWh, a decline of €4.6/MWh when compared to the last round

The French Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) has announced the winners of the latest and the 3rd round of the PPE2 auction for the technology-neutral category of renewables that was open to solar, wind and hydroelectric projects. Solar PV overshadowed onshore wind to win over 92% or 463.7 MW capacity out of 500.6 MW awarded with the former settling with 36.9 MW capacity.

The CRE picked 38 winners in the latest round, 35 of which belonged to ground-mounted PV projects. The weighted average tariff reached €80.6/MWh, down by €4.6/MWh compared to the previous round. Some of the big winners include EDF Renewables, Q Energy, and Neoen. A summary of this round is available on the CRE’s website.

In the previous technology-neutral round, the CRE picked 432.5 MW capacity out of 500 MW offered.

Programmation Pluriannuelle de l’énergie or PPE is the French government’s multi-year energy program through which the country targets to become fully decarbonized by 2050. In 2022, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the target of 100 GW solar capacity for the country by mid-century (see France Announces 100 GW Solar Target).

Under PPE2, covering the period from 2021 to 2026, the government plans to tender close to 29 GW of renewable energy capacity through competitive rounds for 7 categories, including the technology-neutral segment. PPE2 replaces the CRE tender program that ended in 2021.

As of September 30, 2024, France had installed a cumulative 23.7 GW of solar PV capacity, including 3.5 GW during 9M 2024 (see French Solar PV Installed Capacity Reaches 23.7 GW).
