Georgia's Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze has officially launched a net metering scheme for self consumption. The policy will cover power generated from small scale renewable power generators, including solar.
The regulation was first introduced in 2016 by the Georgian Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission (GNERC). The government press agency Agenda reported that the policy allows for any unused electricity to be sent back to the net metering network. Consumers who do so will be compensated for the same.
"The net metering network is first of all a demonstration of mutual beneficial communication between the state and its citizens, said Energy Minister Kaladze according to Agenda. Adding, "On the other hand it is modern, European style of life, thinking and earning income."
Agenda did not mention any other details about the policy.
Earlier this year, Georgia's government and Caucasus Solar Company signed a MoU to conduct a technical economic study for developing eight solar power plants in the country. The study will reportedly take 18 months to complete.
