Germany Adds 194 MW In May 2018

Even as May 2018 PV additions dropped more than 8% over previous year’s numbers, registration data with the Federal Network Agency shows the country achieved 1 GW of PV mark during the month. In 2017, it took seven months to reach that milestone.

  • New PV capacity of more than 194 MW was installed in Germany during May 2018
  • Ground mount installations contributed 37.5 MW of this number, with the rest coming from rooftop PV
  • Cumulative capacity of solar power installations in the country at the end of May 2018 was close to 44 GW

In 2017, May was the month when Germany registered the highest amount of new PV capacity at 212.5 MW (see Germany Added Over 212 MW In May). A year down the line, it installed over 8% less PV with 194.321 MW. Still, the country is on a much higher level than the year before.

During first five months of the year, its PV capacity has hit the 1 GW mark, something it took seven months to achieve last year (see Germany Crosses 1 GW New PV Capacity In 2017).

The German Federal Network Agency numbers show that May 2018 PV additions decreased by 13.75% compared to the previous month.

However, while ground mount installations made up only 37.5 MW of the total in May, it is again rooftop solar that's driving installations. Cumulative PV capacity of the country at the end of May 2018 was 43.98 GW, including 33.4 GW that has been deployed since 2010.
