  • VDMA says German PV equipment makers saw an increase of over 40% in incoming orders in Q2/2021
  • China was the largest market but there is growing demand from other regions as well including Europe and America
  • For 2021, the manufacturers expect an annual increase in sales by 2%, which should grow to 15% in 2022

The German Mechanical Engineering Federation (VDMA) saw more than 40% sequential increase in incoming orders for the domestic solar PV equipment suppliers during Q2/2021. The good news for the German market is dampened by decline in overall sales, though 'slightly', according to the association.

VDMA counts ratio of orders to sales as 2:0 at present which indicates projected recovery in H2/2021. For 2021, the manufacturers are hopeful of a 2% increase in sales over 2020, but for the year 2022, they see the sales growing as much as 15%.

China continued to be the largest export market for European PV equipment makers during the period, however the share of other markets is steadily increasing too as VDMA's Division Manager Dr. Jutta Trube pointed out, "Currently, however, there is an increased order intake from America and also a PV renaissance in Europe. This is supported by concentrated activities, for example within the framework of the European Solar Initiative."

Of the total industry sales reported in Q2/2021, Germany accounted for 16%, while Europe and America each contributed 10% and 36%, respectively. According to VDMA's calculations, compared to Q2/2020, this represents an increase of 3 percentage points in Europe and nearly 30 percentage points in the America. The export ratio of the photovoltaic machinery sector is 84%, it added and noted movement on the all-Asian market as along with China, projects are increasingly being realized in Malaysia and Vietnam.

Confident of an impending strong market demand in the near future, Chairman of the Board of VDMA Photovoltaic Equipment and RCT Solutions GmbH's Managing Director Dr. Peter Fath believes to meet the enormous increase forecasted for PV capacity globally, in 100s of GWs, there needs to be a strong German and European PV equipment industry.
