Germany’s updated solar PV installations for 2024 stand at 16.73 GW
In January 2025, new additions totaled 1.12 GW, down 38% on a MoM basis
Maximum additions in the 1st month of the year came from the rooftop solar segment
Germany has officially exceeded the 100 GW mark for its cumulative installed solar PV capacity with the Federal Network Agency or Bundesnetzagentur pegging new additions in the month of January 2025 at 1.12 GW.
The country had missed reaching the 100 GW milestone at the end of December 2024, exiting it with 99.3 GW in aggregate capacity, including 16.2 GW during the entire year (see Germany Exits 2024 With 16.2 GW New Solar PV Installed Capacity). The updated 2024 PV additions stood at 16.73 GW.
However, the year 2025 has started with the agency recording over 38% fewer PV additions on a month-on-month (MoM) basis with 1.82 GW registered for December 2024, and 30% less on a year-on-year (YoY) basis.
In January 2024, the country had deployed 1.61 GW capacity which is what it now needs to install every month to achieve the 215 GW target for 2030.
This year in January, Germany added 756 MW of rooftop solar capacity, 237.5 MW of ground-mounted capacity, which also includes floating PV plants, and 19.3 MW of balcony PV systems. The remaining 13 MW were installed in other segments such as large parking lots, noise barriers and other structural facilities, according to the agency’s Market Master Data Register as on February 13, 2025.
Recently the German Parliament Bundestag passed amendments to some of the country’s energy laws. Changes for the solar industry are encompassed in the Solar Peak Act, which aims to reduce bureaucracy and increase digitalization (see German Parliament Amends Energy Policies Ahead Of Federal Election).
