Germany Adds 2 GW Solar In January-February 2026

Bundesnetzagentur: February installations slowed to their lowest monthly level since March 2025

  • Germany installed 1.149 GW of solar PV in January 2026 and 930 MW in February, totaling just over 2 GW for the initial 2 months of the year

  • February’s 930 MW was the lowest monthly addition since March 2025, with rooftop solar dropping to 273.1 MW from 579.7 MW in January

  • Germany’s cumulative installed solar PV capacity reached 119.5 GW by the end of February 2026

Germany’s new solar PV installations within the initial 2 months of 2026 totaled over 2 GW, according to the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur). This includes 1.149 GW in January, followed by 930 MW in February.

The agency’s data shows that the 930 MW registered in February is the lowest monthly addition since March 2025. This comprises 273.1 MW installed as rooftop solar, a sharp decline from the previous month’s 579.7 MW. Ground-mounted solar PV capacity also dropped from 561.7 MW in January to 521.4 MW in the ensuing month.

Plug-and-play or balcony solar capacity of 18.8 MW in February rose slightly from 15.9 MW in the previous month. Overall, Germany’s cumulative installed solar PV capacity at the end of February 2026 reached 119.5 GW.

Recently, the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) said that as of the end of 2025, Germany had nearly 4.8 million PV systems with a combined installed capacity of 106.2 GW. This represents a 17.6% increase in the number of systems compared to the previous year, while the installed capacity rose 11.8%.

According to Destatis, Germany’s solar PV imports declined in 2025, as the value of imported solar cells and modules fell 7.8% year-on-year (YoY) to €1.8 billion. Exports dropped more sharply, decreasing 30.1% from €513 million to €358 million. China remained the dominant supplier, accounting for 88% of Germany’s PV imports, followed by the Netherlands with 5.2%.

Overall, Germany imported nearly 5 times as many PV systems by value as it exported. Most exports were to European markets, led by Italy (15.9%), and followed by Austria (14.8%) and Switzerland (7.2%).

Solar module production in Germany fell sharply during 9M 2025, dropping 60.6% YoY to 509,200 units. Production had already declined in 2024, with about 1.5 million modules produced for sale, down 56.2% from nearly 3.5 million in 2023.

Recently, energy ministers from 7 German states reached out to the federal government, urging it to consistently pursue renewable energies and protect consumers from ‘unpredictable price roulette’ due to the country’s reliance on fossil fuel imports in the wake of the Middle East crisis (see German States Urge Stronger Renewable Energy Drive Amid Middle East Tensions).
