  • The last solar PV auction of 2019 in Germany had little over 501 MW awarded in the oversubscribed tender
  • The winning bids ranged between €0.0470 to €0.0620 per kWh, as compared to previous round's €0.0459 to €0.0520 per kWh
  • Weighted average winning bid was higher than the last round with €0.0568/kWh
  • Maximum capacity was awarded to projects in Bavaria, followed by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein

In the last and fifth solar PV auction in Germany during the year 2019, the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) selected 121 bids to award 501.25 MW of total capacity. This amount is 1 MW more than 500 MW offered for which a total of 346 bids came with a capacity of 1,344 MW.

Winning bids ranged between €0.0470 to €0.0620 ($0.052 to $0.069) per kWh, compared to the previous round's winning range of €0.0459 to €0.0520 per kWh. Average winning bid level was determined as €0.0568 ($0.063) per kWh, going up from €0.0490 per kWh in the previous round (see Germany Awards 153 MW Under 4th PV Auction Of 2019).

According to the agency, the largest capacity of 148 MW out of 501 MW awarded will come up in Bavaria, followed by 80 MW in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and 49 MW in Schleswig-Holstein.

The agency took the opportunity to reprimand bidders for making avoidable mistakes in filling up the forms that led to the exclusion of 76 bids representing 235 MW capacity.

Winners are now expected to submit financial security; if they fail to do so their award might be cancelled. The next solar PV auction round will be held on February 1, 2020.

Germany has already surpassed its original annual solar PV addition target of 2.5 GW after having added over 3.6 GW at the end of November 2019 and is now expected to exit the year 2019 with around 4 GW installed (see Germany Installed 270.5 MW New Solar In Nov 2019).
