India Grid Connected 24.56 GW PV Till Nov 2018

Rooftop solar continues to be the Achilles Heel of the Indian government's 100 GW solar plan by 2022. While the official solar rooftop target is 40 GW by 2022, according to the latest MNRE numbers the country has managed to install only 1.33 GW till November 2018.

  • MNRE says India's total installed renewable energy capacity till November 2018 was 73.96 GW
  • Operational solar PV capacity had reached 24.56 GW, with ground mounted solar adding 23.23 GW and rooftop solar contributing 1.33 GW
  • Karnataka leads all Indian states in terms of operational solar power capacity - with 5,255 MW switched on by November 2018

India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) says the country had an operational solar PV capacity of 24,567 MW as of November 30, 2018. This comes from 23.23 GW of ground mounted and 1,334 MW of rooftop solar. The official solar rooftop target for India is 40 GW, out of 100 GW of total installed solar capacity by 2022.

A few days back, MNRE said the country's installed solar power capacity as of October 31, 2018 had reached 24.33 GW and that it would tender 30 GW each in fiscal year 2018-19 and 2019-20 (see India Installed 24.33 GW PV Till October 2018).

Karnataka is India's top solar state with a total installed capacity of 5,255 MW, followed in some distance by another southern state – Telangana reached 3,410 MW. Ranked third is Rajasthan with 3,130 MW, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 2,641 MW and Tamil Nadu with 2,228 MW.

MNRE head RK Singh informed the elected representatives of the Indian Parliament that as of November 2018,  around 73.96 GW of renewable power capacity was installed in India of which 37.84 GW was added in the last 4.5 years.

Wind power leads all renewable technologies with more than 35 GW connected to the grid.

The minister also said that foreign direct investment (FDI) of $3,217 million was received in India's renewable energy sector between April 2015 and June 2018.
