RIL & Adani commit to 25 GW RE in Andhra Pradesh; Solar PLI tranche-II has big names vying for its share, says Bloomberg; 40% RE mandatory for new coal/lignite projects; Jindal Stainless wants 27 MW rooftop solar for industrial units.

RIL and Adani to build 25 GW RE in Andhra Pradesh: RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani has announced his company's plans to invest in 10 GW solar energy projects in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh (AP) while speaking at the AP Global Investors Summit (GIS) 2023 in Visakhapatnam on March 3, 2023. It follows Ambani's speech in Uttar Pradesh in February 2023 when he said RIL will set up 10 GW renewable energy capacity in the state. At the same event in AP, Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) of the Adani Group is reported to have committed to set up 15 GW combined renewables capacity across Anantpur, Kurnool, Kadapa, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts of AP.

Big bidders for Solar PLI tranche II: According to a recent Bloomberg report, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), Tata Power, First Solar, JSW Energy, Avaada Group and ReNew Energy Global are among the bidders for India's INR 195 billion Solar Production Linked Incentive (PLI) tranche II (see India Launches PLI Tranche II Solar Manufacturing Tender). RIL's Reliance New Energy Solar, Shirdi Sai Electricals (SSE) and Adani Infrastructure were the winners of INR 45 billion tranche I. SSE COO Dr Balachander Krishnan recently delivered a keynote at TaiyangNews Cell Production Equipment and Processing Materials Conference. 40% RE for thermal power plants mandatory: The Ministry of Power (MoP) has mandated any new coal/lignite based thermal power generating station coming online on or after April 1, 2023 till March 31, 2025 to establish a minimum of 40% renewable energy capacity as Renewable Generation Obligation (RGO). Alternately, these plants will need to procure and supply this amount of renewable capacity from 3rd parties. A captive coal/lignite based thermal generating station shall be exempt from requirement of RGO subject to its fulfilling Renewable Purchase Obligations as notified by the Central Government.

27 MW rooftop solar for Jindal Stainless: Jindal Stainless will get 27 MW rooftop solar PV capacity for its industrial units as it seeks to decarbonize its operations. One of the projects with 21 MW capacity will be located at its Jajpur unit in Odisha and the other with 6 MW capacity will be located at Hisar in Haryana. Entire capacity is expected to come up for INR 1.2 billion ($14.5 million). Completion is scheduled for March 2024.
