  • Italy has selected 7.69 GW of solar PV across 474 projects, with an average winning bid of €56.82/MWh under the inaugural FER-X auction

  • Wind received 940 MW across 29 projects, about 1/3rd of which involve full repowering

  • Nearly 12 GW of applications were submitted for this round, led by solar PV; winning projects must begin operations within 36 months

Italy has concluded the inaugural auction round under its Transitional Fonti di Energia Rinnovabile (FER) X renewable energy incentive scheme, selecting 7.69 GW of solar PV capacity across 474 projects, managed by Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE).

The weighted-average winning bid for solar PV was determined to be €56.82/MWh, 37.34% below the cap, while the highest winning bid was €62.67/MWh. Over 4 GW capacity was awarded to projects with more than 50 MW installed capacity, followed by 1.9 GW for projects between 10 MW and 50 MW, and 1.76 GW for those under 10 MW.

For the 29 wind energy projects selected for a combined 940 MW, the average weighted winning bid was €72.85/MWh, according to GSE.

The agency had received nearly 12 GW of renewable energy project applications for this auction round, including 10 GW for solar PV, against the 8 GW GSE had allocated for the latter (see Italy’s FER-X Round Attracts 12 GW Applications).

Almost all the selected projects for solar PV are new installations, while about a third of wind applications are for full repowering. Winning projects must begin commercial operations within 36 months. An analysis of the winning projects and bids is available on GSE’s website.
