Malaysia launched the SuRIA Home program with MYR 150 million in rooftop solar rebates for households
Eligible homeowners can receive up to MYR 3,000 in rebates for residential solar systems
The program aims to support up to 50,000 homes and add around 250 MW of rooftop solar capacity by 2026
Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has launched a new program to incentivize residential rooftop solar installations, targeting around 250 MW of deployments in 2026.
The Sustainable Rebate & Incentive Assistance (SuRIA) Home program aims to support households in reducing electricity costs through residential rooftop solar, announced the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister, Fadillah Yusof.
Speaking to reporters recently, Yusof said Malaysia’s energy supply is expected to be sufficient until July 2026 in the face of the global fuel supply crisis. The government is now working to ensure the same can be extended until December by sourcing additional supplies from abroad, including Africa, reported The Edge Malaysia.
“The implementation of this program (SuRIA) is part of the Government's measures to help the people face the challenges of the global supply crisis (GSC) following the increase in energy costs and uncertainty in the global energy market due to geopolitical conflicts in West Asia, in addition to accelerating the country's energy transition agenda,” stated the minister.
Under the SuRIA initiative, the government has allocated MYR 150 million for solar rebates. Eligible domestic consumers installing rooftop solar systems can receive rebates of MYR 600 per 1 kW AC of installed solar capacity. The rebate can go up to a maximum of MYR 3,000 for systems of up to 5 kW AC capacity.
PETRA said the program is expected to benefit between 45,000 and 50,000 homes and add around 250 MW of cumulative rooftop solar capacity nationwide. Only Malaysian citizens registered as individual Domestic Low Voltage users who have successfully commissioned a solar system with the national utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) will qualify for the rebate.
Payments will be transferred directly to the customer’s registered local bank account after TNB’s verification.
Consumers who previously received solar rebates or assistance are not eligible.
The SuRIA Home program will cover eligible installations that begin operations until December 31, 2026, or until the 250 MW quota is fully subscribed. Rebate applications will open from June 1, 2026, on a first-come, first-served basis.
The ministry said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of the energy transition reach the public directly while supporting Malaysia’s target of achieving 70% renewable energy capacity by 2050.
