NYPA’s Renewables Strategic Plan envisions renewable energy expansion for New York State
This includes more than 3 GW of new capacity addition through 37 projects
These facilities will generate enough power for up to 3 million households
The New York Power Authority (NYPA) has approved its inaugural Renewables Strategic Plan under which it plans to add over 3 GW of new renewable energy generation capacity through the addition of 37 projects in New York State. These represent solar PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
These 37 projects are planned in every region of the state that together will generate enough electricity to generate power for 2.5 million to 3 million households as the overarching objective is to provide affordable, clean power to the denizens.
“The plan details stringent selection and feasibility criteria and will be updated as new projects are identified, providing consistent transparency into NYPA’s progress,” explained NYPA Chairman John R. Koelmel.
These 37 projects represent the 1st tranche of the NYPA Renewables projects as the authority will update the plan with further projects for consideration in H1 2025. It has identified projects totaling up to an additional 3 GW of capacity for future tranches so far.
This update will be done biennially until 2033 to pave the way for more renewable energy generation in the state as the NYPA targets to cease fossil fuel generation at its small natural gas power plants by the end of 2030.
Currently, it is evaluating up to 3 GW of additional projects for inclusion some of which include projects by Boralex, CS Energy, Forward Power, NextEra Energy Resources, Oriden, and YSG Solar, among others. The details of these 37 projects are available on the NYPA website.
Meanwhile, NYPA has reopened its request for qualifications (RFQ) to additional private developers, including community-based developers and investors seeking to collaborate with it on the development of renewable energy generating projects. It will accept applications till September 30, 2025. Pre-qualified entities will be added to the 89 entities previously pre-qualified in 2024, it adds. Its details are available on the NYPA’s procurement webpage.
This NYPA plan to advance New York State’s clean energy generation further comes after it achieved the 6 GW distributed solar target a year earlier, having mobilized close to $9.2 billion in private investment across the state (see New York Achieves 6 GW Distributed Solar Target Ahead Of Schedule).
