Green hydrogen development arm of Oman, Hydrom has signed agreements with consortiums led by Amnah and Green Energy Oman (GEO), and bp Oman to build green hydrogen projects worth over $20 billion to generate 500 kilo ton/annum (KTPA) of green hydrogen annually from 12 GW renewable energy production capacity.
Amnah consortium includes Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), Blue Power Partners (BPP) and Al Khadra Partners. The latter is part of Oman's Hind Bahwan Group. Having won the contract for Z1-01 blocks, this consortium will develop around 200 KTPA of green hydrogen from 4.5 GW renewable capacity for planned green steel plants in the Port of Duqm within the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD).
Bp Oman will develop 3.5 GW renewables capacity in block Z1-03 to produce 150 KTPA green hydrogen for the development of green hydrogen for ammonia production and export.
GEO is leading the consortium of Oman's integrated energy company OQ, Shell Oman, Kuwait's state-backed energy investor EnerTech (ETC), Intercontinental Energy (ICE) and Golden Wellspring Wealth for Trading (GWWT). This group has won the rights to produce 150 KTPA of green hydrogen from 4 GW of installed renewables capacity in block Z1-04.
These companies won the contracts under a competitive auction round conducted by Hydrom in December 2022 to award land blocks in Duqm region for large scale integrated green hydrogen projects (see RFP For Green Hydrogen Projects In Oman Launched).
In all, Hydrom has signed agreements for a total area of 960 km² to the three winners.
On the occasion, Oman's Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, Ministry of Energy and Minerals and Hydrom also signed a head-usufruct agreement that provides Hydrom the authority to grant land for renewable energy and clean hydrogen projects.
Hydrom has also entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Oman's sole natural gas transportation system operator OQ Gas Networks (OQGN) to collaborate for the development of green hydrogen pipelines.
"We are confident that we are on the right path to establish a bright future for renewable and sustainable energy, as outlined by Oman Vision 2040," said Oman's Energy Minister, Salim bin Nasser Al-Aufi. "There is significant demand from major international companies to invest in the Omani hydrogen sector, and we look forward to collaborating with our partners to establish a strong and resilient presence in this promising sector over the next few decades."
