Solar technology company Great Lakes Solex PR has announced plans to build a 6 GW strong solar module factory in the unincorporated territory of the US, Puerto Rico, saying it is encouraged by the US Department of Energy's (DOE) funding for solar and storage in the region.   

Greak Lakes is hinting at the US government's recently announced $450 million funding to help improve rooftop solar access for local households in Puerto Rico (see Expanding Rooftop Solar Access In Puerto Rico).  

It expects the 6 GW fab to create over 800 new jobs for which the company plans to partner with post-secondary education institutions to create workforce development pipeline training programs, the company announced in a brief statement.  

The management of the Illinois, US-headquartered company seeks to establish the state-of-the-art factory in Aguadilla municipality. It has also secured the backing of the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (IHCC) and claims to have strategically partnered with the local business organization Invest Puerto Rico (IPR) to explore its business feasibility on the island.
