PV Wins 131MW In Hungary’s Tech-Neutral RE Auction

MEKH says the 72 proposals selected under the renewable energy tender allow production of 193 GWh of clean power annually for the next 15 years in Hungary through small and large scale power plants ranging between 300 kW to 20 MW.

The Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (MEKH) has selected 72 proposals under the country's first technology neutral renewable energy auction. All of these subscribe to solar PV technology, barring one that relates to a gas-fired power plant. It will support these projects with a total subsidy amount of HUF 229 million for a period of 15 years.

Altogether the projects are expected to generate 193 GWh of clean power annually. MEKH pointed out that all winners for the solar power plants are local Hungarian small and medium enterprises.

Of the winning projects, 61 projects were selected in the small power plants category with 300 kW to 1 MW capacity and 11 in the large power plant category of 1 MW to 20 MW. The lowest winning bid in the small power plant category came in at HUF 21.2 ($0.065) per kWh and that for large scale power plants was even further down at HUF 20.2 ($0.062) per kWh. Altogether, 131 MW of solar capacity was awarded. Details of the auction results can be viewed online on MEKH's website.

The tender was originally launched in October 2019 and it had attracted proposals for 349 MW. Of the 169 proposals MEKH received till January 2020, 168 came in for solar PV representing 348.5 MW.
