  • QatarEnergy partners with Samsung C&T to construct a 2 GW solar power plant in the Dukhan region of Qatar

  • The Dukhan plant will double Qatar’s solar power production capacity and support its national renewable energy and emissions goals

  • Under Phase I, it will supply energy from 1 GW installed capacity to KAHRAMAA by 2028

QatarEnergy, the state-owned petroleum company of Qatar, has signed an engineering, procurement, installation, and commissioning (EPIC) agreement with Samsung C&T’s Engineering & Construction Group to build a 2 GW solar power plant in the Dukhan region of Qatar’s capital Doha.

Touting it as one of the largest solar projects in the world, the partners share that the Dukhan power plant will be developed in 2 phases, reaching a total capacity of 2 GW by mid-2029. Once completed, it will double Qatar’s solar power production capacity and support the country’s renewable energy targets under Qatar National Vision 2030. Qatar targets 4 GW of cumulative solar PV capacity by the end of this decade in its electricity mix (see Qatar Launches National Renewable Energy Strategy).

Electricity generated from the 1 GW Phase I of the project will be supplied to KAHRAMAA, the sole transmission and distribution system operator for the electricity and water sector in the country. Grid connection is scheduled for the end of 2028. QatarEnergy says the plant will feature advanced solar tracker systems and inverters designed for high-temperature conditions to maximize efficiency and reliability.

“When completed, the Dukhan solar power plant, along with Al-Kharsaah, Mesaieed, Ras Laffan solar power plants will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 4.7 million tons annually, while contributing up to 30% of Qatar’s total peak electricity demand,” said Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi.

Previously known as Qatar Petroleum, the Dukhan project was initially announced by Qatar Energy in 2024 as part of its Sustainability Strategy (see QatarEnergy Announces 2 GW New Solar Power Mega Project In Qatar).

Speaking of sustainability, TaiyangNews will host a Solar & Sustainability Virtual Conference on October 9, 2025, to discuss ever-evolving sustainability practices in the PV industry. Register free for the event here
