Scatec of Norway has announced a solar PV project of 1 GW capacity in Egypt, accompanied by a 200 MWh battery storage facility. It says this will be the country's 1st hybrid solar and battery storage project.

For this project, the company has signed an early-stage cooperation agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC).

The 2 companies signed the agreement at the COP28 in Dubai. The project is backed by the African Development Bank (AfDB) that has signed a letter of intent (LOI) for its financing package at competitive terms.

Scatec said the project partners will now work on securing land lease agreements and grid connection for the facility. Details of the location and timeline were not revealed.

Calling itself the largest solar developer in Egypt, Scatec has been operational in the African nation since 2015. It has 380 MW in operation here in the form of 6 plants under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC).

Scatec is also working on a 100 MW green hydrogen production facility in Egypt's Ain Sokhna to be powered by 260 MW solar and wind capacity, with Fertiglobe as the offtaker (see Scatec Partners With Fertiglobe & TSFE).
