Royal Dutch Shell is expanding its solar energy portfolio through Shell UK, with more than 700 MW capacity to come up in the UK through 2 separate developers.

Renewable energy developer Island Green Power is to develop more than 700 MW of solar PV power projects as initial collaboration, with co-located battery storage capacity potential.

Another developer Clearstone Energy will set up several utility scale solar power projects with a combined export capacity of 100 MW with co-located storage potential in South-East of England. This would enable Shell to generate renewable power close to customer demand.

Without sharing any more details of these contracts, Shell shared both deald would be subject to a future final investment decision.

"Shell is building an integrated power business which spans the renewable generation, trading and supply of clean energy to businesses and consumers," said Shell UK Chairman David Bunch. "We will work with both Island Green Power and Clearstone Energy to deliver high-quality solar PV projects to supply more of our UK customers with renewable power."

Back in January 2018, Shell Energy Europe signed up to procure solar power from 69.8 MW Bradenstoke Solar Power Project for its customers in the UK (see Shell Signs PPA For Large UK PV Project).

Island Green Power announced a joint venture with Foresight Group in October 2020 to co-develop 700 MW greenfield subsidy free solar PV capacity in the UK (see New Joint Venture For 700 MW Solar PV Capacity In UK).

Recently, Island Green Power was in news for announcing its plans to deploy more than 1 GW solar PV capacity at the site of 2 coal power plants in the UK in the form of 600 MW Cottam and 480 MW West Burton PV facility. While the Cottam coal project is now not functional, West Burton coal facility is to be shuttered in 2022.
