  • Solx has started building what it says will be Puerto Rico’s 1st solar panel manufacturing factory

  • It will be a 1 GW solar module assembly line at the former Hewlett-Packard site

  • It will invest $25 million in the initial phase for the factory located in Aguadilla

Solar module manufacturer Solx is building a new solar module assembly line in Puerto Rico with 1 GW annual capacity. Construction is currently on for what the company touts to be the region’s 1st solar panel manufacturing facility.

The Solx Puerto Rico (SPR) facility is being built at the former Hewlett-Packard site in Aguadilla. In the initial phase, it is investing $25 million out of a total estimated $64 million investment for the project.

Calling itself ‘100% domestically owned, operated, and free of foreign interest,’ Solx promises the construction phase of its factory to create more than 200 local jobs, with over 600 jobs projected across logistics, supply chain, and supporting industries.

Solx said that on completion and commercial operations starting by August 2025, it will feature a state-of-the-art semi-autonomous assembly line with 1 GW annual production capacity.

In March 2025, Solx contracted Origami Solar for steel frame supply for its Puerto Rico produced solar modules, including for a large-format G12 module.

“Our SPR manufacturing facility is an important step forward for Solx, as it underscores our commitment to delivering reliable, domestically-produced clean solar energy nationwide,” said Solx CEO and Co-Founder James Holmes. “Additionally, SPR’s focus goes beyond solar panels, as our facility will ensure Puerto Rico will be a key supplier to the North American renewables industry.”

Holmes launched Solx after quitting Sunnova Energy in April 2024, where he served as the Vice President Origination, Business Markets. He was also with SolarCity briefly. The company’s Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board is Sam Sanchez, who announced plans for a 6 GW solar panel manufacturing facility in Aguadilla through Great Lakes Solex PR in August 2023 (see Plans For 6 GW Solar Panel Fab In Puerto Rico).
