The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy in South Africa has released a list of projects that have bid for the country's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP), round 5 or bid window (BD) 5. The list comprises bids received as on August 16, 2021.
Of the total 102 projects registered, there are 39 bids for onshore wind and 63 for solar PV technology, clearly showing the dominance of the latter. The list, available on the government website, does not mention any specific project capacity, developer or details of the next round.
The government had launched REIPPPP 5 in March 2021 seeking to procure 2.6 GW renewable energy capacity, back then the government also shared a list of 8 shortlisted bidders for Risk Mitigation IPP Procurement Program (RMIPPPP) (see South Africa Launches Round 5 Of Renewable Energy Program). Back then the government said there would be another bid window launched in August 2021.
Meanwhile there is growing interest in the business community for renewable energy sources as wind and solar power to increase their self-reliance for electricity needs (see RFP For 900 MW Renewable Energy In South Africa).
