The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) in Spain has released a draft plan to call for an auction process for 5.84 GW renewable energy and storage capacity, for which it is now seeking public consultation.
It will offer this 5.844 GW grid access to energy produced by new renewable energy generation facilities and storage projects. This capacity can be awarded in 17 nodes of the country's electricity transmission network.
Projects will be awarded based on completion timelines and preference given to those with socio-economic and environmental considerations. Facilities that offer self-consumption option will also stand a good chance of being selected.
Capacities offered comply with the provisions established by the country under National Integrated Renewable Energy Plan (PNIEC), but will be finalized once national grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE) that has now rechristened itself as Redeia, will put on paper in its 2026 transmission network plan.
Public comments for the proposed plan, that can be viewed on MITECO's website, will be accepted till June 24, 2022.
Under PNIEC, Spain aims to install 60 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030. As part of plans to reach there, it will conduct renewable energy auctions between 2020 and 2025 comprising 10 GW PV. Under the 1st renewable energy auction in January 2021, solar PV secured 2.036 GW out of 3 GW on offer, followed by 866 MW win for this technology in the 2nd auction in October 2021 (see Spain's 2nd Renewable Energy Auction Results).
